Ritual is a culinary series of small intimate events hosted by the best chefs in the world at beautiful private homes in California.

While our beloved restaurants gradually regain momentum, Ritual brings together enthusiastic patrons and talented artists, and present the opportunity to build new relations and reach out to new horizons.
Sarah Kersten Studio
I’m Sarah, founder of Sarah Kersten Studio. I work in Berkeley, California, where the combination of a rich and robust pottery tradition and the inspiration of coastal California combine to inform the nature of my work.
Much of my aesthetic has grown out of the natural tendencies of the materials that I work with. I love high fired stoneware for the beauty of its features— which are always muted and subtle in hue— and for its strength. These traits, together with a passion for seasonal cooking, a great love of being and making at home, and a deep respect for pottery tradition, make my work what it is. When so much of the world is plasticized and high-tech, it’s pottery’s ancient heritage that grounds me, along with my commitment to showing up day after day to move my work forward. After years of creating alone, I now work with a very small team to make the work in my shop.
I aspire to create pieces that are sculpturally beautiful, effortlessly functional, and of heirloom quality. All of my designs respond to real needs, needs I’ve had in my own kitchen, or wishes I’ve heard from friends and chefs I’ve worked with. I work slowly, considering shape, size, and the overall feeling of a piece for as long as it takes to get it just right— sometimes years. But I like it that way. I make objects that will live intimately with you and yours, that you’ll handle multiple times a day, and I take that honor seriously, and joyfully. For me, pottery and its history is part of who we are as a people and a deeply meaningful way to spend my days, as is the knowledge that my work goes towards making people’s homes more beautiful, functional places to live, love and cook.
Coffee is a seasonal fruit and we source it directly from origin in freshly harvested lots. We practice small production methods that allow us to scrutinize and perfect our processes. Attaining a perfect roast is an intuition, a smell, a sound, a slight change in color— it’s about careful attention to detail that comes through in every cup.
Our company takes its name from the ‘sightglass,’ the viewing window on our vintage PROBAT coffee roaster that exposes the complex and delicate process of roasting coffee. We believe that knowing the story behind your coffee—where it was grown, how it was processed, and who handled it along the way—is a powerful link from the cup to the wider world.
Ultimately, we aim to deliver the highest quality achievable in all aspects of our business, whether that be sourcing the most beautiful and wondrous coffees attainable or employing the most mindful and quality-focused practices possible.
Smitten Ice Cream
When you walk into a Smitten scoop shop, there’s no ice cream at the counter (we know, it’s weird). After you pick your flavor, our Brrristas® pour fresh ice cream base into the Brrr®. A chilly fog then billows over the counter as liquid nitrogen freezes each scoop to-order. A minute or two later, you’re eating the freshest, creamiest ice cream possible! Aside from our less-than-conventional method of freezing ice cream, we do things a bit differently than other ice cream shops. Because all of our ice cream is churned-to-order, we can say ‘hell no’ to nasty stabilizers, gums, and other unpronounceable ingredients. In a scoop of Smitten’s Salted Caramel ice cream, you’ll get nothing but California cream, milk, butter, cane sugar, a drop of lemon juice, and a dash of salt. That’s it. We don’t make ice cream the easy way, but that was never the plan. We make ice cream that we’re proud of. We’re constantly in the kitchen, testing new flavors, going back-to-the-drawing board, and testing some more.
